Recognizing the transnational nature of much recent art from Denmark, the exhibition asks: Can a nation define itself culturally by looking beyond its traditional borders?

Often boldly political, the work of the nine featured emerging and established artists considers cultural hegemonies, the nation state in a global framework, post-colonialism, nomadism, and the Syrian refugee crisis. Through performance, photography, video, sculpture, and sound, Jeannette Ehlers and Patricia Kaersenhout, Søren Thilo Funder, Jens Haaning, Maj Hasager, Tina Helen, Stine Marie Jacobsen, Jane Jin Kaisen, and Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen reveal migrant patterns and alter them in unexpected ways. Challenging traditional gender, racial, and national divides, the artists often reverse roles: women become men; black men become white; tourists become locals; locals become tourists. Ultimately, Crossing the Line examines the response of one country’s artists to questions of international import. Kim and the third in a series of emerging artist exhibitions presented by the Studio Museum in Harlem. Like its predecessors, Flow illustrates the individuality and complexity of twenty-first-century contemporary art, this time from creators around the world. While the majority of these artists have exhibited abroad, many are new to U.S. audiences. As an extension of the Museum’s mission to serve as a nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally, Flow reflects this critical moment in the interconnected histories of African, African-American and transnational
Black life. A survey of new work by twenty emerging artists, these artists were either born in Africa or born to African parents, and currently live and work across Africa, Europe and North America. Coming of age after the mid-century movements for national liberation in Africa, this generation has witnessed shifts in political, economic and social realities. Within this recent history, Africa is often illustrated in mass media and popular culture through images of warfare, disease and poverty, as well as through celebrity fascination and philanthropic efforts. These representations often fail to articulate the complexities that produce this visual information. The artists presented here express their world through creative visions that have been informed by these changes. Rather than understanding Africa as simply defined by a single position, they offer a multitude of perspectives—sometimes dissonant, at other moments in sync. The work they produce imagines an understanding of Africa that extends beyond geographic borders as it remains engaged with the present realities of African peoples. In this way, the artists remain particularly conscious of the continued foreign involvement on the African continent, as well as the persisting systems of racial classification established under colonialism.

Curator
Christine Y. Here, the notion of undecidability describes a multiplicity of borderline zones obliterating the limits between art and non-art, artist and object, fiction and reality, aesthetic and political positions. In the postmodern cultural context, it seems clear to us that what we define as undecidable cannot be reduced to a single identity, territory, or fixed and unitary history. Relationships and shifts are foregrounded between objects, truths and certainties within a current artistic production that resists easy interpretation or predictability. Contemporary art’s concomitance with the every day and with life appears to be particularly destabilizing, such that current productions seem to suspend any definitive assessment that might attempt to circumscribe what is actually being proposed before us.

Authors
Marie Fraser
Jean-Philippe Uzel
Patrice Loubier
Jocelyne Lupien
Joanne Lalonde
Thérèse St-Gelais
Vincent Lavoie

Editor
Thérèse St-Gelais

Publisher
Les éditions esse

Publication date
2008

Binding
Softcover

Size
6.25 x 8.75 inches
296 pages

Languages
French
English

ISBN
978-1-9809052-1-6

This limited edition print is part of a series produced by Critical Distance featuring original artwork by exhibiting artists. The video functions as a portrait of a woman, a block of water, who tells her story. Her name is numeric: 1,329,784. She explains that the process of evolving was the result of having to cross the Mediterranean habitually over hundreds of years. She speaks through subtitles about her name, how she is programmed to survive, and the bureaucratic power structures that continue to restrict her experience. She continues by speaking of a subversion: that the women in her family have the ability to haunt the places they once inhabited. Drawing connections between archaeology and displacement, which are both considered in their politically motivated sense, Antonaki’s character explains that the women of her time like to return to the sites they were excavated from. This is both their matriarchal heritage and an act of “cheating historical time.”

In Xenofontos’ work, she examines everyday stories that are inflected with insight into the power structures of civic spaces. This includes a conversation with a Kurdish mother named Ayşe, who requested asylum in Cyprus in 2007. Speaking in Turkish with her friend—who responds in a Greek Cypriot dialect—Ayşe is depicted swiping through images of her new home in Ankara, Turkey, where she has since relocated. The second portion of the film follows Ayşe in her space of work, where she is a cleaner in a local school, and in her living room, where Xenofontos interviews her in front of her wall of images of Abdullah Öcalan—a once prominent yet controversial leftist political figure. Through these vistas, Xenofontos reflects on the labour of domesticity and the precarity of settling during politically motivated migration.

Through their work, both Xenofontos and Antonaki explore how notions of home exist in relation to the migratory subject. They ask: How can the body stabilize in the face of exile? How can women’s labour question the precariousness of borders? And, what are new forms through which we can understand dispossession? In bringing their work together, this exhibition reflects on strategies of adaptation, resourcefulness, and survival that occur as a result of, but not in direct dialogue with, political governance.

Edited by curators Magdalyn Asimakis and Heather Rigg.

Designed by Nour Bishouty, featuring a risograph dust cover.

Artists
Eleana Antonaki
Marina Xenofontos

Curators
ma ma
(Magdalyn Asimakis and Heather Rigg)

Design
Nour Bishouty

Publication date
2020

Binding
Softcover, perfect-bound, with risograph dust cover

Size
6 x 9 inches

Language
English

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO PRACTICE A POST-OIL SENSE OF SELF AND CULTURE?

This publication provides techniques to investigate your petro-subjectivity. The design of the text blocks reflects the permutation, visually fragmenting the rhythmic poem.Artist
Laura Margaret Ramsey

Publishers
Art Metropole
Critical Distance Centre for Curators

Publication date
2022

Binding
Zine, saddle stitched, risograph, pastel green paper with black ink,
die-cut cardstock cover

Size
6.5 x 4.5 inches
28 pages
Edition of 100

Language
English

ISBN
9781989011098

About the artist:
Laura Margaret Ramsey (she/her) is a Toronto-based scholar, imaging specialist and artist.
