About us

Critical Distance is a not-for-profit project space, publisher, and professional networks devoted to critical curatorial inquiry and practices in Toronto, Canada, and beyond.

Since opening our doors in 2013, we have produced over 72 exhibitions, many of which are accompanied by catalogues and limited or varied editions.

Between 2016 and 2021 we participated in the Toronto Art Book Fair and Edition Art Book Fair in conjunction with Art Toronto, featuring our own publications and editions, plus those of publishers and arts producers we admire, including Dominica, Half Letter Press, Independent Curators International, Contemporary&, Studio Museum of Harlem, Kayfa ta and others.

In 2024, we piloted Turning Tables, a hybrid art book fair + show featuring local and international publishers including Floating Opera Press (Berlin), Book Works (London, UK), Sheer Spite Press (Montreal), The Goldfarb Gallery (Toronto), and many others. We are pleased to continue in 2025 with Turning Tables 2 as an international art book market + show through which are connecting Toronto audiences with an even wider array of critical arts publishers from across Canada and around the world.
