Phillip Monk's Struggles with the Image: Essays in Art Criticism is the first of a series of books which are intended to reassert a role for critical writing within the development of a history of contemporary art in Canada. In gathering together and reprinting this series of essays we are inviting the reader to (re)consider the importance of their contribution to the development of contemporary critical writing.
The eleven essays gathered here are drawn from periodicals and catalogues which were published between 1980 and 1984. Together they trace a trajectory across the critical issues of contemporary art and art criticism. The other books in this series will trace different routes. As a group they will contribute to the building of a history of contemporary art in Canada.
